The physical proportions of the Philippine Eagle are nothing short of monumental. Females, which are significantly larger than males in a classic display of raptorial sexual dimorphism, can weigh up to eight kilograms and measure over one meter from the tip of their beak to the end of their tail. Their wingspan, which can stretch up to two meters, is relatively short and broad compared to other large eagles, an evolutionary trade-off that sacrifices long-distance soaring efficiency for explosive acceleration and agile maneuvering among dense branches.
Perhaps the most arresting feature of Pithecophaga jefferyi is its head, which is adorned with a spectacular crest of long, narrow, cream-and-brown feathers. It sits quietly on a high branch, scanning the surrounding foliage for movement before launching a sudden, silent ambush.
This hunting style requires incredible spatial awareness and agility. The eagle’s long, rounded tail acts as an oversized rudder, allowing it to make sharp, mid-air bank turns and brake suddenly to avoid colliding with thick trunks. Its flight is characterized by a series of heavy, powerful flaps followed by a controlled glide, a pattern that minimizes noise and prevents alerting potential prey.
While its historical moniker suggests a diet exclusive to monkeys, the Philippine Eagle is actually an opportunistic generalist. Its primary prey varies significantly by island; on Mindanao, it feeds heavily on the Philippine flying lemur (Cynocephalus volans), while on islands lacking colugos, it targets palm civets, flying foxes, monitor lizards, and large snakes. When these primary targets are scarce, the eagle will hunt monkeys, specifically the Philippine long-tailed macaque, utilizing cooperative hunting strategies where one partner distracts the troop while the other strikes from behind.
Territoriality and Lifelong Monogamy
The social and reproductive lives of Philippine Eagles are defined by intense territoriality and deep fidelity. These raptors are strictly monogamous, forming pairs that mate for life and defend vast, exclusive territories that can span up to 100 square kilometers. The bond between a pair is reinforced through spectacular aerial courtship displays, which include mutual soaring, talon-grappling, and dramatic vertical dives through the canopy.
Nesting is a monumental, multi-year undertaking. The pair constructs a massive nest platform, often measuring over two meters across, high in the forks of giant emergent trees such as the Shorea species (commonly known as apitong or red lauan). These nests are typically positioned 30 to 45 meters above the forest floor, providing a panoramic view of the surrounding canopy and a secure launch pad for hunting excursions.
The reproductive cycle of the Philippine Eagle is one of the slowest of any bird. Females lay a single egg every two years, and both parents share the incubation duties over a period of approximately 60 days. Once hatched, the chick is completely dependent on its parents for nearly a year, requiring constant feeding, protection, and flight tutoring before it can successfully hunt on its own. This low reproductive rate means that the loss of even a single adult can have devastating consequences for local population dynamics.

The primary driver of this decline is the catastrophic loss of its primary forest habitat.
