In the dense, mist-shrouded highlands of North Sumatra, a silent revolution in primatology is unfolding. The Tapanuli orangutan ( Pongo tapanuliensis ), a species only formally described in 2017, remains one of the most enigmatic and critically endangered primates on the planet. Restricted to a fragmented pocket of the Batang Toru ecosystem, these great apes represent a distinct evolutionary lineage that diverged from their Bornean and Sumatran cousins nearly 700,000 years ago.
